Since Columbine, 31 other school shootings have taken place in the United States to date. The Columbine school shooting occurred 14 years ago, which means that the United States averages two school shootings a year, and to most that may not seem like a very high number; however, outside of the United States every other country combined, there has only been 14.
The most recent school shooting occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary, where 20 children and six adults were fatally shot. Since then, schools all over the U.S. have re-evaluated their security plans assuming that it can’t happen to them next. On Saturday, an intruder stabbed an 8-year-old California girl identified as Leila Fowler to death in her home, and on Monday, school officials increased security at her elementary school. Tragedies such as these generated our question; are schools moving fast enough with increasing security?
Naturally, most people do not fix a problem until it occurs; however, in situations such as these, there are preventative measures that can limit a school's vulnerability to such incidents. Security 101 understands the unique challenges that many schools face when it comes to protecting students, faculty, and staff, and we are devoted to meeting schools' security needs.
